When he returns, Natalia tries to make amends, but soon another argument arises—this time over whose hunting dog is better. Again, the quarrel becomes intense, and Lomov collapses due to stress and exhaustion.
Believing Lomov has died, Chubukov panics. When Lomov regains consciousness, Chubukov hurriedly declares them engaged, hoping to avoid any more delays or disputes. However, even as the engagement is announced, the couple resumes their argument, showing how trivial matters dominate their lives.
