“A Question of Trust” is an ironic and clever story about a thief named Horace Danby, who believes he is an honest man—despite committing one robbery every year. He uses the stolen money to buy rare books, his only passion. Otherwise, he lives like a respectable, law-abiding citizen.

One day, Horace plans to rob a wealthy house while the owners are away. He disables the alarm and enters the study, ready to crack open the safe. But suddenly, a woman appears. She claims to be the owner’s wife and catches him in the act.

Instead of panicking, she calmly tells Horace that she, too, needs the jewels from the safe and won’t call the police if he opens it for her. Trusting her, Horace opens the safe and leaves without taking anything.

A few days later, he is arrested. The real owner reports the theft, and Horace realizes he was tricked—the woman was another thief who outsmarted him.
