 Summary: The Midnight Visitor – Robert Arthur

 

“The Midnight Visitor” is a clever and suspenseful story about Ausable, a secret agent who doesn’t look like a typical spy. He is fat, calm, and speaks with a slight American accent. One evening, Ausable is with Fowler, a young writer who expects excitement from a spy’s life. Instead, he finds Ausable’s personality dull and unimpressive.

However, things take a dramatic turn when another agent named Max enters Ausable’s hotel room with a pistol. Max wants to steal important documents that Ausable is expecting. Surprisingly, Ausable stays completely calm. He tricks Max by saying that there is a balcony outside the window and that the police are knocking at the door for regular security.

Frightened by the idea of getting caught, Max tries to escape through the supposed balcony and jumps out—only to fall, because there is no balcony at all. Ausable made up the entire story on the spot.

The story ends with Fowler realizing that a spy’s work may not always be glamorous, but it certainly requires sharp thinking and a cool mind.

पुलिस से डरकर मैक्स उस कथित बालकनी से भागने के लिए खिड़की से कूद जाता है — लेकिन हकीकत में वहाँ कोई बालकनी होती ही नहीं। औसेबल ने यह पूरी कहानी मौके पर ही गढ़ी थी।
