Summary: The Necklace – Guy de Maupassant

“The Necklace” is a powerful short story about a woman named Matilda Loisel, who dreams of living a rich and luxurious life. She is born into a modest family and marries a simple clerk. Though she has a comfortable life, she is unhappy and always wishes for wealth, expensive clothes, and jewelry.

One day, her husband brings home an invitation to a grand party. Instead of being happy, Matilda becomes upset because she has nothing beautiful to wear. Her husband gives her money to buy a new dress. Still, she feels incomplete without jewelry. To solve this, she borrows a dazzling necklace from her wealthy friend, Madame Forestier.

At the party, Matilda looks stunning and enjoys the admiration. But after returning home, she discovers that the necklace is missing. To replace it, she and her husband borrow a large amount of money and buy a similar one. They return it without telling the truth. Then, for the next ten years, they live in poverty, working hard to repay the debt.

In the end, Matilda meets Madame Forestier and learns that the original necklace was fake—worth only a few hundred francs. Their suffering was all for nothing.

लेकिन पार्टी के बाद जब वे घर लौटते हैं, तो उसे पता चलता है कि हार कहीं खो गया है। वह और उसका पति हार को ढूंढ़ते हैं लेकिन नहीं पाते। अंत में वे हार की जगह वैसा ही एक नया हार खरीदते हैं, जिसके लिए उन्हें बहुत अधिक कर्ज लेना पड़ता है।

इसके बाद अगले दस सालों तक, वे गरीबी और संघर्ष से भरा जीवन जीते हैं। वे कर्ज चुकाने के लिए दिन-रात मेहनत करते हैं।

आखिर में, मैटील्डा अपनी सहेली मैडम फॉरेस्टिए से मिलती है और उसे सच्चाई बताती है। तब मैडम फॉरेस्टिए उसे चौंकाते हुए बताती है कि जो हार उसने उधार दिया था, वह नकली था — जिसकी कीमत कुछ सौ फ्रैंक ही थी।
