The Story Begins: Footprints in the Snow

The story opens with two boys in London seeing wet footprints on the ground, but they are shocked—there’s no person making them. They see the footprints moving by themselves across the snow-covered ground.

This surprises them, and they follow the prints, but after a while, the footprints disappear. The boys are confused and a little scared. What they don’t know is that these are the footprints of Griffin, who is walking around completely invisible.

Griffin’s Background

Griffin was a brilliant scientist but a lawless man. He hated people and believed he was smarter than everyone else. He worked hard for years and finally succeeded in making himself invisible. But becoming invisible meant he had to remove his clothes, because clothes remain visible.

Now invisible and free, Griffin had no home and no money. He could not walk around in the cold without clothes. He had burned down the house of his landlord in London because they had a fight. After that, he had nowhere to go.

However, in the morning, when the shop opened, he tried to escape quietly but was noticed. Now, dressed in clothes, he was visible. The workers chased him, but he managed to escape by removing his clothes again—becoming invisible once more.

In Another Shop

To survive, Griffin entered another shop that sold clothes and wigs. He stole a set of clothes, dark glasses, a hat, and a fake nose to cover his invisible face. Now he could move around without being noticed as a strange figure.

He also robbed the owner of all the money in the shop. Again, we see that Griffin is using his power for selfish and illegal activities.

Arrival in Iping Village

Griffin decides to go to a quiet place and chooses a small village called Iping. He books a room at a local inn and pays in advance. People in the village find him strange—he never removes his coat, hat, or gloves. His face is always covered with bandages, and he wears dark glasses, even indoors.

He tells the innkeeper and his wife that he is doing experiments and does not want to be disturbed. But they become suspicious. The villagers start gossiping about him. His strange behavior makes people uneasy.

Robbery at the Clergyman’s House

One day, the village clergyman (priest) and his wife hear noises in their house. They try to catch the thief but see no one there. Still, the money is gone. They’re shocked. They don’t know they’ve just been robbed by an invisible man—Griffin.

At the same time, the innkeeper and his wife decide to confront Griffin about not paying rent. They enter his room and are shocked to find no one inside. Suddenly, furniture starts flying, chairs move by themselves, and the room becomes a mess.

People think the room is haunted by ghosts. Actually, Griffin had become invisible again and was causing chaos to scare them off.

Later, the village constable (policeman) is called to arrest Griffin. But when they try to catch him, Griffin removes his clothes again, becomes invisible, beats them up, and escapes. The villagers are left scared and confused.
